Arthur's Pass is a small village in the heart of the Southern Alps and situated between Canterbury and the West Coast of the South Island. It takes about two hours to drive from Christchurch to Arthur's Pass (170km) – and about one and a half hours from Greymouth. Popular activities include hiking in Arthurs Pass and skiing
Arthur's Pass National Park was New Zealand's third national park and established in 1929. It is a park of beautiful contrasts, dry beech forest in the east and verdant rainforest in the west. It has a historic highway and railway running through its centre. Hikers and climbers are drawn to Arthur's Pass for its high snow-capped mountains, picturesque valleys and ravines, steep gorges and braided rivers. The one-day hike to Avalanche Peak is a popular and extremely rewarding experience. more
Visitors should be prepared for all types of weather and bring 'layers' of clothing suitable for mountainous terrain. Typically the summer months (December to March) are mild - February can be hot, up to 35°C. Periods of stormy weather are common at any time of year.
Accommodation in Arthurs Pass is limited in Arthur's Pass village and the backpackers, lodges and cabins book up early in the peak season, December to April. Public shelters and camping grounds are available.

Welcome to Arthur's Pass Alpine Motel, conveniently located in Arthur's Pass Village, in the heart of Arthur's Pass National Park in NZ's Southern Alps. 9 warm cosy cabins, all with their own kitchen, shower and toilet. In the middle of the South Island lies Arthurs Pass National Park. It's a rugged area of the country, is mountainous and can get quite cold. The landscape varies from shingle riverbeds and beech forests to deeply gorged rivers and dense rainforest. Snow-covered peaks, glaciers and scree slopes also feature. Arthur's Pass village provides easy access to the park.
Experience the best of Arthur’s Pass's diverse alpine vegetation, waterfalls, wetlands, rich history and stunning mountain views on this walk. This walk provides the chance to walk from Arthur’s Pass village to view the Dobson Memorial at Arthur’s Pass summit. The track gradient is generally gentle, with some steep steps either side of Bridal Veil Creek.
Mobile-friendly - Described as a "hidden gem" by powderhounds.com, Broken River Ski Area offers fantastic off-piste terrain for adventurous low-intermediate to expert skiers and boarders. The open powder bowls and steep chutes, stunning scenery and authentic, uncrowded, welcoming atmosphere make for a memorable experience. The on-mountain DBB accommodation is just 15 minutes walk from the ski tow.
Two short walks lead to the cave entrances – you can can also walk through the cave passage which meanders and twists in pitch darkness for 594 m between the two entrances. This cave walk is not suitable for small children.
