The Outlet of the Clutha - Where a Great River Rushes
At the south-eastern tip of Lake Wanaka, the lake's waters narrow and pour into the Clutha, one of New Zealand's largest rivers. The area around the Outlet is popular with fishermen, families, joggers and cyclists. A popular place for afternoon barbeques, the outlet has an established campground nearby, providing a tranquil holiday retreat.
A broad track meanders from Wanaka around the lakeshore to the Outlet, then follows the Clutha River down to Albert Town. This delightful track offers welcome shade in summer and is sheltered from the elements in winter. It is particularly scenic, with constant views of the Clutha's emerald-green water, the odd trout lurking in the shadows, and the tangy aroma of the manuka trees.
